Theo's Sports Corner by Theo Abbott

It is a Great Time to be a DC Sports Fan

There is excitement at this time surrounding sports teams in Washington DC. The Washington Capitals have advanced to the second round of the NHL Playoffs to play the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Washington Wizards have evened up their NBA Playoffs series with the Toronto Raptors. The Washington Nationals are as usual a contender in Major League Baseball. The Washington Redskins have a new veteran quarterback in Alex Smith and the City is excited about the team’s potential next season. D.C. United will be playing its first season at Audi Field after playing 22 years at RFK stadium.

The Caps will face a familiar foe in the Playoffs. The Penguins have beat the Caps in back to back playoff matchups. Hopefully, the third time is a charm for the Caps. The Caps are led by superstar Alexander Ovechkin. The Penguins are led by superstar Sidney Crosby. Ovechkin and Crosby are considered the best players in the game. The difference is Crosby has multiple championships and Ovechkin has none. Something has to give.

The Wizards are in an intense playoff battle with Raptors. The series is tied. The pivotal Game 5 is up next. Each team has won both of their home playoff games. The Wizards are led by superstars John Wall and Bradley Beal. The Raptors are led by superstars DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry. Let’s see if the Wizards can advance to the next round and keep the City buzzing.

The Nats have been up and down during the early part of the baseball season. However, the team is in the mix and expected to make the playoffs. All eyes are on superstar Bryce Harper and what he will do. Harper is in the last year of his contract with the Nats and he is expected to be the highest paid player in baseball history with his next contract. The Nats are hoping Bryce resigns with the team and stays for many years to come. We will see what happens.

It’s an exciting time for DC Sports. There is a lot of anticipation to see how far teams can go. DC needs at least one of their teams to win a championship. It has been so many years since that has happened. Will this be the year that the DC championship drought ends? That remains to be seen.
